Garage Side Doors Are Really Useful to Have

There are garage side doors. I will talk you through my experience of having one installed if you are unsure about it.

Garage Side Door

One of the first things my wife and I agreed on was to install a garage door. Our driveway is at the back of the garden and our garage is at the bottom of the garden.

The problem was that there was a wall between the two. I have had to walk out the front door, walk around the front of the house, walk down the side of the house, and then open the garage every time.

For anyone with a wife or that is a wife, will know that the man gets requested to go out to the garage quite often, and when it is raining or snowing, I decided to push forward with the agreement we made.

1) Getting a quote garage doors near me

I started calling around local builders. I didn’t want to wait 6 months and found that builders were under high demand. Side doors, also known as personnel doors, are installed by a garage door installation company. I got the best garage door specialists to give me a quote after I called around.

It might be a simple task in your garage. There was a single bricklayer on the side of the garage. I was told by the first company that a single layer of brick could be risky if the door slammed, so I added an extra bricklayer around the entrance. I am not an expert in this field but it sounded like they were trying to make money.

The garage roof was pitched quite high and the brickwork went right to the top of it. They need to install a lintel above the side door so that it won’t fall when someone walks through it.

The second layer of brick was reinforced by my neighbor who had a side door in his garage.

I chose the door that I wanted. Most garage specialists will give you a choice. If you’re going down the builder route, you can either buy from a DY shop such as B&Q or on Amazon. Make sure you ask the builder if you need to buy the frame for the door and the exact dimensions of the door.

I was ready to start work once the door was picked and ordered.

2) Preparing your garage

Asking what they need you to do before the day is important to make sure everything goes to plan. I had to make sure the garage was ready for the installation after the door was made.

The garage was not emptied completely. The back half of the garage was where I moved everything. I tried to protect myself from the dust by using towels and a plastic sheet.

I was surprised that my electric sockets needed to be moved, as the garage specialists said they were not able to do it. I would have to call an electrician or have someone do it for me.

The light switch was moved from one side to the other so that the hole for the door wouldn’t be blocked.

It was all I had to do for my installation. If you ask the specialists if there is anything you need to do in advance, it will make your experience a lot easier.

3) having the door installed

Installation day should be easy if you have done everything correctly.

Due to being on holiday, my installation day was moved back. I wanted an ambitious date. Outside of the installation, I had some problems. I was supposed to work from home that day. I had to go to work that day because the internet wasn’t working and the car was malfunctioning. Thankfully my parents were there.

The slow close was not part of the plan. I requested that one be installed after I heard a different quote. They only install it on industrial doors.

The restrictor is used for home use. The door can’t go past 90 degrees if this is not used.

You can see the full video of my installation. The installation and my inspection of the door at the end of the day are covered in this article.

4) Finishing results

I am very pleased with my door. I am unlikely to open the main garage door any time soon because it has made my life more convenient.

Are you ready?

If you follow the steps above, you can get a garage side door like mine.

You can leave a comment if you have any questions. If you’ve already had one installed, I’d love to hear about it.
